Always marking the close of the year, Candyland was once again a fantastic event that brought out many old and new faces. It was great to see them all and I look forward to doing it again next year. The vibe was thick, the djs were working it, and the venue was rammed.
We had a moment of silence for Jaryd right before the headliner when one. I knew he was there in the room with us. This one was actually taken at Candyland 2005. Great night.
Although I couldn't be there because I had to play at the same time, the second Jaryd tribute show took place at WVUM 90.5FM, The Voice of the University of Miami from 10p-1a. With friends like Francisco, his girl CV, and his mother Linda in the studio; I'm sure it was just as memorable as the first. As soon as I get the recordings of the first show, I'll make them available.

South Florida's longest-running electronic dance music event goes down tonight in Fort Lauderdale. Historically known from bringing everyone out of the woodworks, I don't expect the 12th year to be any different. I'm looking forward to playing back to back with Chino and Burn for three and a half hours, should be fun.
I remember hitting this one up with Jaryd. It was a yearly thing. This year he'll be there in sprit.

It's been a long weekend of reflection and generally getting right with things. It's great to really connect with family and friends and figure out how to take the next step forward. We can only do our best, and hope know that our friend will be in our hearts forever.
I can only give you the link, because the embed code isn't working. I'll figure out why later, but enjoy the video. "He's the only white one," present company seemed to say, but he's #53, and he makes it look easy. Droopy Nuts got rhythm.
Tonight, right now... actually (sorry about that) we're on the air for my boy, Jaryd, on some tribute madness. Hit wvum.org or tune in to 90.5fm in South Florida as we run it all over the place, for my dog. Special guests, stories, great music, don't sleep.

It's been a long week with a lot of perspective and personal reflection. This particular experience is definitely a first for me. A whole gang of Jaryd's friends and family are getting together tomorrow at Crandon Park, all day BBQ business. Hit me in via e-mail or the comments section of this post for details.
Here's a little something I put Jaryd onto. He introduced me to Ian Pooley, I hit 'em off with the remix!
Below is a link to Jaryd's obit guest book. So many people had so many wonderful things to say about him, and they're all spot on. Head on over and lookit.

Here's another track that we both were extremely amused by after a few New Castles and some great pizza.

My homeboy was a clown, and a dork at that.
We both instantly found the inherent greatness in this white label remix.
Reel 2 Real - I Like To Move It (Oizo Rmx)
That's not mentioning the cheesy 80s sound thing we were both down with.
I'll post some of those later. Haaa!!

JARYD TYLER BOROS, of our hearts and dreams, returned to the harbor of God's embrace December 14, 2007 age twenty-six and in eternity ageless. Love of family, unity, laughter and compassion are his signatures on the memories of all who carry him. Incredibly creative and remarkably talented in expression, he filled our ears with his music, painted our eyes with his art, opened our hearts by his listening and warmed our souls with his kindhearted wit. With a heart of gold, our beautiful Jaryd was filled by love for all. If a friend was in pain, he was there, if someone needed a little extra cash, his pocket was open, if you needed a shoulder to cry on Jaryd was always willing to lend his. He dreamt big, striving to use his creativity to build a life for himself and one day a family. He received his masters in Information Technology from FSU. His passion for design and the websites he created earned him much admiration. His friends are abundant. "They are all such good people", Jaryd would say and the company he kept mirrored the life he lived. Music filled his soul and some of his happiest moments were spent disc jockeying with friends and on the radio Friday nights. He was as passionate about music as he was about art, friends and family. Jaryd knew how much he was loved and felt secure in those bonds. A companion on the path to all, and without judgement, he did not mean to leave us this early. All who love him know he has arrived in a better place. He will be in our hearts forever and the loss will strengthen and inspire the future of our family: "mom" Linda Mendelson, "always like a father to me" George Mendelson, "dad" Bruce Boros and his loving spouse Christina, brothers and sisters "big bubby" Aaron, "remy" Jeremy, Alan and Laura, his soul's complement and true love CV Vidal, and his loving immediate family. A welcoming lighthouse on familiar shore, his radiance brings us safely home in remembrance. Always with a smile, always with a hug.

I also had the opportunity to meet and talk at length with some of his line and chapter brothers last night. Great people who were very close to Jaryd while he was up at FSU and after he returned to Miami. Here is a graphic they drafted up in his memory.
I'm working on getting some of his old mixes together, as well as the song that was played at the chapel service, so I could share them with you. As soon as I can scan the o-bit that appeared in yesterday's Miami Herald, I'll get that up to.
My words aren't coming together like I'd want them to, but whatever, it is what it is.

A tribute graphic one of his co-workers at The Score Group put together. Yesterday was the chapel service, internment, and first day of Shiva. A jarring experience to say the least, but I'm glad I could be there for his family and friends. I was so happy to finally meet Linda and George, despite the circumstances. Wonderful people. I also saw some old faces I hadn't seen in a while. I'll be back there tonight. The phone hasn't stopped ringing.
I'm still in disbelief.
Damn, J.

Last night I caught an episode of the History Channel's new series Gangland, which takes a historical look at American street gangs. Having seen my fair share throughout my life in Miami, the story of the Latin Kings definitely caught my attention. Gangland airs Thursdays at 9pm EST on the History Channel. Check the series theme laced up by Buckshot and courtesy of Duckdown.

I'm not even going to go into some long-winded shit about the missions I've been on, but I will say final exams are just the tippy-top of that shit.
If I can make it any clearer the missions I've been on, this has been the soundtrack. You might recognize it from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Infact, it's playing right now...
English Beat - March Of the Swivelheads
Don't cry, dry your eyes, finals are over tomorrow and I'm back on mine.
Bet that up.
For the time being, munch on this, my ATCQ gem of the week.

IN REMEMBRANCE: CARLOS "PATATO" VALDEZ: 11.4.1926 - 12.4.2007
Carlos 'Patato' ValdezFor over 60 years Carlos "Patato" Valdez demonstrated how a musician could combine technical skill with superb showmanship. His conga playing demonstrated the fusing of melody and rhythm, and his keen understanding of rhythm is rooted in dancing. Patato even mastered the art of actually dancing ON TOP of his congas during his performances, to the delight of the audience.
Valdez dazzled an audience well into his eighties with his rumba moves. He's also is the man who gave Brigitte Bardot a mambo lesson in the film “And God Created Woman”. Valdez also expressed his understanding of melody through bass and tres, the Cuban folk guitar.
Valdez' understanding of melodic percussion was well ahead of his time and his technique required advances in drum technology. During the late 1940's he helped develop the first tunable congas, as earlier models were tuned by the unwieldy method of heating them with a sterno can. His interest in design, as well as his friendship with LP Founder Martin Cohen, led to the development of the LP Patato Model Congas, one of the top-selling conga drums of all time.
It is Valdez' spontaneity and charm that enabled him to draw audiences from vastly different backgrounds and cultures into the irresistible Afro-Cuban rhythms which he created. Patato will be remembered by all as a giant of a man, and his spirit shall live forever through his music.
