So if you haven't heard or read already, there was a huge issue with the Madvillainy sample set that was going around courtesy of Kevin Nottingham. After seeing countless sample sets emerge on a variety of blogs from Kevin's joint to HHIR, Lyrics To Go, Metal Lungies, Rock the Dub to wherever; it was somewhat of a shock initially to hear that Madlib (probably one of the most forward thinking crate diggers next to Pete Rock and Premo, in my opinion) was getting at all these people asking for the set to be taken down.
Long story short, the samples apparently have not been cleared and thus he has a right to be concerned. I see this and understand it clearly. We're identifying him to those who hold the rights to these uncleared samples. He needs to protect himself. While for us, these sample sets serve a completely different function, having your ass out in the open like that is some scary shit. It's serious. Look at what happened to Biz Markie. They're opposing ends of the argument with completely different (and valid) reasons to justify either point of view.
I'm just curious if the Beat Konducta is aware of The Crates which has been going around for quite sometime and covers all the material used on The Unseen.
I'm a big HUGE sample head/crate digger, so you know I had to chime in.
Interesting topic, discuss.

Here's my whole thing with this issue.
If he didn't clear his samples before distribution then he violated rule #1. Anyone who's a heavy sample head like Madlib should know that by now.
Second, him going after the perpetrators who posted the "sample sets," did not help his cause. If anything he made it more hot for himself now more than ever. This story is on all Hip Hop blogs across the world. He pretty much fucked himself over for a number of reasons.
Now that the spotlight is on him: record execs, artists and more importantly the sampled artists will most likely be more reluctant to let him use their work (due to this whole mess and ordeal.) If you think people are not reading all these blogs - HAA.
Everyone is online now and everyone knows everything that happens in the blink of an eye. I'm pretty sure Madlib is getting an earful from his manager right now for taking matters into his own hands.
PS: Cool Blog man! I'm feeling what you got up on here.
Yeah you could definitely say it's his bad for not clearing. That is a fundamental truth that can't be ignored here.
I also think he should've just laid low and hollared at a PR person or a manager before taking on the internet. stupid move, really.
we'll see how homie fairs after this.
thanks for reading, picked up on your blog from this whole mess and i'll definitely be keepin up from here on out.
Cool man, do you want to link each other's blogs?
I get a fair amount of visitors daily and I'm just trying to spread my music through the right target audience, which happens to be the same people you cater to.
We both can benefit from this. Let me know what's up.
Peace!
yeah definitely. it's up already. check it.
Props! I got you down to...Peace.
